How Porn Can Cause Teen Issues
It’s common for all kids to have their own phones these days. A few generations ago, such a concept would’ve been unheard of. Now, parenting articles talk about how we must let our kids connect using the internet and how it would be hindering their social lives if we don’t. It’s interesting how kids survived for millennia without these things, and now, they’re suddenly considered necessities.
The Dangers of the Internet: How Porn Can Lead to Teen Issues
Whether or not you believe that kids should be allowed internet access, you need to be aware of the dangers. We hear a lot of frightening stories about online predators luring children, but people rarely talk about one of the biggest internet issues. Pornographic materials are everywhere now. Gone are the days when kids would have to sneakily buy a dirty magazine and keep it hidden from their parents. They can now look at porn whenever they like from the privacy of their phones.
Teen issues can arise from porn usage, especially when the porn is violent or depicts problematic attitudes about sex. Serial killers like Jeffrey Dahmer and Ted Bundy both watched violent porn. This isn’t to say that porn will turn your child into a murderer, but it can lead to unhealthy beliefs and attitudes about sex and relationships. Teens who watch porn may believe that all women are supposed to look like porn stars or that physical affection can only be displayed in the most extreme ways. A child’s brain is still developing throughout the teen years, and being exposed to such imagery and concepts can have lasting damage.
Internet Issues: What a Parent Should Do
You don’t have to choose between completely blocking your kids from the internet or letting them do whatever they please without supervision. Set parental controls, take away their phones and lock them in a safe spot when it’s nearing bedtime, and make checking their internet history part of the deal. You’re the parent, so don’t be afraid to set boundaries.
