Miley Cyrus and Her Recent Performance

Unless you’ve spent the past few weeks living under a rock, you’ve probably witnessed quite a bit of discussion about Miley Cyrus. All across America, concerned parents are talking about the young star’s performance at the MTV video music awards, a provocative show that involved butt slapping, strip teasing and plenty of full-frontal twerking with her married co-performer, Robin Thicke. As if that wasn’t enough, Miley also has a new music video out, in which we see her swinging on a giant wrecking ball, fully in the nude. Her previous single, “We Can’t Stop,” the song performed at the award show, makes references to the party drug ecstasy, which recently made headlines for causing two deaths at a New York rave.

The Reasons That Stars Behave Badly

Certain stars have always been a bit wild, but Miley’s behavior has many people baffled. Why does this beautiful young woman, who has already had such a successful career, feel the need to degrade herself in this way? Some may be quick to use the downfalls of child stardom to explain it away, but it’s actually a lot more than that. Sex has become a major selling point in our society. Many young women, stars included, are beginning to feel like they are nothing if they aren’t using their bodies in a provocative way.

As far as Miley’s performance, she may not be entirely to blame. The MTV video music awards have always been known for controversy, and Miley was likely pressured to keep the tradition going by acting risque on stage. As with any other job, the point is to make money. Negative attention is still attention, and Miley likely received a healthy boost in income due to the controversy over her performance that night.

Strong Self-Esteem is The Parent’s Responsibility

If you have a daughter that looks up to Miley, it’s your responsibility to guide her in the right direction. Explain that Miley is a young woman herself, and she may live to regret some of the choices she has made, especially those involving drugs and sexuality. Show your daughter some of the nasty comments that are being said about Miley on practically every entertainment or news forum on the web. Hopefully, you can help her understand the weight of earning a bad reputation in this society. As unfortunate as it is, Miley will likely branded a negative influence for a long time to come, even if she chooses to improve her behavior. Do your best to help your daughter aspire to be better than that.
