Teen issues are perhaps one of the scariest aspects of raising kids. As parents, it’s wise to be aware of the common problems teens deal with and how to spot the signs that your child might be struggling.

  • Depression, anxiety, and other mental-health problems
  • Bullying
  • Body image and self-esteem
  • Substance abuse and addiction
  • Underage sex
  • Stress from feeling pressured and overwhelmed
  • Rebellious and defiant behavior

Watching for Teen Anxiety and Other Issues

You know your child better than anyone, so you will most likely know when something doesn’t seem right. The key is paying attention and making sure you’re not in denial. It can be difficult for some parents to admit their kids have problems. It makes them feel like they failed at their job. These days, teen self esteem is struggling more than ever. You can do an excellent job raising your kids and still have them end up dealing with problems.

Watch for changes in your child’s personality or lifestyle. A sudden loss of appetite, lethargic behavior, signs of self-harm, and mood swings can all pinpoint that something is wrong. Other signs include a lack of interest in schoolwork or extracurricular activities, abuse or animosity toward siblings or other family members, or shoplifting and other criminal activities. If your teen seems afraid to go to school, it’s possible she might be getting bullied.

How to Handle Teen Issues and Help Your Child

When you feel certain that something is off, your next step is to talk to your teen and figure out the problem. Depending on the nature of the issue, seeing a doctor, talking with a therapist, or even setting up a meeting with the school might be your next step. If your teen is reluctant to talk about the problem, a mother-daughter retreat could be a good way to create a safe space where she can be truthful.
