Talking to Your Teen About Sex

Self Esteem for Healthy Teen Sex: Helping Your Daughter Make Smart Choices Talking to Your Teen About Sex

A 2011 study found that the teenage brain is incapable of thinking through decisions the same way the adult brain can. The brain is still developing during these years, making it the prime time to make a poor decision regarding sex.

Therefore, talking about making smart decisions isn’t necessarily the best way to get your teen to do the right thing. You want to help develop teen self esteem so your kids want to choose the best route for themselves.

1. Accept that Teen Sex is Going to Happen

Some parents preach abstinence and refuse to go into detail about STD’s and how they work. This is a mistake. Even if you’re against sex before marriage, it’s important to be honest with your teens about how to protect themselves if they make a different decision. Blindly sticking your head in the sand is the absolute worst things you can do.

2. Don’t Be Afraid to Tell the Truth

You don’t want to come across like you’re exaggerating to scare your teen, but you also don’t want to sugar coat the nasty details. When discussing sexual diseases, get into detail about the symptoms and how they could affect your teen for the rest of her life. Talk about how people with herpes often need to use special dating sites to find partners and how difficult finding a relationship can be. Talk about how people with HIV need to be on medication for the rest of their lives.

3. Teach Self Esteem Rather than Demanding Perfection

You might hope that your teen takes the path of purity, but it’s best not to think in black and white. There is a wide spectrum between total wild promiscuity and remaining a virgin until marriage. Rather than place unrealistic expectations on your teen, encourage her to view every potential sexual interaction as a sacred learning experience. It’s not about remaining pure. It’s about choosing partners that are worthy of an investment of time and energy.
