A Father’s Role: Helping Your Daughter Bond with Her Dad What Roll Do Dad's Play in a Daughters Life

If you’d like your daughter’s father to be more involved in her life, science backs up your concerns. According to a study from the Journal of Family Psychology, young girls who have positive relationships with their dads are less likely to develop emotional disorders such as anxiety and depression. Along with promoting teen self-esteem, a strong relationship will also help your daughter maintain healthy boundaries as she explores friendships or relationships with men as an adult.

Whether you’re a father who is looking to get closer to your daughter or a mother hoping to improve your daughter’s relationship with your dad, you might feel confused about the next steps to take.

1. Schedule Bonding Time for Daughter and Dad

Spending time together as a family is important, but don’t be afraid to step aside and let your daughter spend some solo time with her dad. Encourage any common interests they share and make suggestions for things they might do together. Whether or not you’re in a romantic relationship with her father, he may still be open to your opinion. It’s possible that he doesn’t realize the importance of spending devoted time together, but with a little push, he will make more of an effort.

2. Help Them Work Through Clashes

As the mother, you’re in the unique position of being able to observe your daughter and her dad from the outside. If they tend to fight, it’s likely because they have more in common than they think. Help point out these shared traits and other areas where they might be able to relate to each other.

3. Enlist Other Male Role Models

If your daughter’s father isn’t around, you can enlist the help of a trusted uncle, brother, grandfather or friend. They say it takes a village to raise a child, so don’t be afraid to ask for help from members of your community that you trust.
