Discussing Teen Issues with Dating and Sex: Try a Mother-Daughter Retreat What's happening in the Dating World with Teens

Sex and romance have always been major teen issues, but many parents can no longer keep up with what’s happening in the world of modern teen dating. The terminology has changed, and many of the rules we grew up with no longer apply.

Starting Young

These days, it’s common for very young kids to seek relationships with boyfriends or girlfriends. Even kids as young as 10 or 11 may begin talking about the boys they’re seeing at school. If this is the case, don’t be alarmed. These relationships are usually innocent, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t keep an eye on what’s going on.

Even at a young age, it’s common for boys to pressure girls to talk about adult subjects or even share inappropriate pictures of themselves. If your child is 12 or younger, you should absolutely monitor all social-media and text interactions.

Now is a good time to sit your child down and have a talk about sexting and inappropriate images. Explain that once something is on the internet, it will remain there for the rest of time.

Talking to Boys

“Talking” is a common part of dating and usually refers to the stage between developing an attraction and becoming an official couple. However, unlike the courtships of the past, this phase of dating often never leads to a serious relationship. Teens “talk” to someone, which may involve hooking up, and then they move on. Since it isn’t common for teens to introduce their parents to someone they’re just talking to, your child may essentially have a boyfriend or girlfriend without your knowledge.

Reaching Out for Help

Discussing these topics with your teens isn’t easy. If you need some help, consider going on a mother-daughter retreat. Our retreat places you in a peaceful and supportive environment without the everyday distractions that can make teens resistant to sharing. Instead of remaining lost in a haze of teen issues surrounding boys and sex, your daughter will be able to open up and receive wisdom from an adult perspective.
